  • Fun Bubbly Facts

    Jan 29, 2009

As we approach Valentine’s Day, a BIG BUBBLY HOLIDAY, I thought you might enjoy some of these fun bubbly facts:

    •    The average speed of a cork coming out of a bubbly bottle is 40 MPH (So be careful!)
    •    The average number of bubbles per flute is 2 million
    •    California champagne bubbles are smaller at the bottom of the flute and increase as they rise toward the surface… bubbles burst at the surface
    •    Cellulose fibers (DUST) help facilitate bubble production in flutes. (If you want a REALLY bubbly glass of champagne, rub a paper towel in the glass before pouring.)
    •    The higher the temperature of the bubbly, the faster the bubbles will rise to the surface and come out of solution (and the bubbly will become flat faster.)
    •    Young bubbly has bigger bubbles and ‘aged’ champagne has smaller bubbles (it is NOT a function of charmat vs. method champenoise.)
    •    There is two times the amount of CO2 in champagne vs. beer
    •    The ‘foam’ or fizz on the top of champagne is just bursting bubbles
    •    When possible, serve bubbly in etched flutes as they will allow the release of bubbles, CO2 and aromas faster than non-etched glassware.
